Q: I am getting strange video/audio/input problems or getting an error about a missing DLL file.
A: The game requires that you have the current version of DirectX installed. You will want to install DirectX from the CD before attempting to play the game. You can either install it from the autorun menu or by double-click on the DX5ENG file found within a DirectX folder on the CDROM. If you have obtained the Demo version of the game DirectX is not included. You can download the newest end-user version of DirectX from the following address:

    www.microsoft.com/directx

Please reference our DirectX troubleshooting guide if you continue to experience troubles with DirectX.

Q: The game is crashing when I attempt to run it.
A: This could actually be caused by a couple of different reasons. You will want to check the following:

Q: The game I got bundled with my computer is giving the error 'Error: Couldn't open file c:\fs\BmpMan\BmpMan.cpp'
A: You will want to download the fsoempatch.exe file found on the patches section below. This should correct this within the bundled version of the game.

Q: I get a warning about not having the Audio Compression Manager (ACM) installed.
A: You need to install an ACM on your machine. Follow these steps for installing it:

    1. First check if you have the Microsoft ADPCM installed:
      • Click on the 'Multimedia' icon in your Control Panel
      • Click the Advanced Tab, and expand the Audio Compression Codecs list
      • If you see 'Microsoft ADPCM Codec', then you have the required ACM codec
    2. If you see the correct ACM codec installed, there are two possible reasons why the ACM is not working in the game:
      • You don't have msacm32.dll in your path
      • Your ACM version is not 3.5 or higher
    3. If see the ACM codec is not installed, then follow these steps to install it:
      • Click on the 'Add New Hardware' icon in your Control Panel
      • Select 'No' when asked if Microsoft should search for new hardware (Click Next)
      • Select 'Sound, video and game controllers' from the Hardware Types list (Click next)
      • Select 'Microsoft Audio Codecs' from the Manuf. list
      • From the list of codecs on the right, select 'Microsoft ADPCM CODEC' (Click Next)
      • Reboot for the changes to take effect

Q: I have a 3DFX card, and it says "Expected VXD version 1.2, got V1.1". What do I do?
A: This is caused by one of the following:

    1. Your \windows\system\fxmemmap.vxd file is out of date. Getting and installing the latest Glide drivers *should* fix this according to 3DFX. Or, simply copy the fxmemmap.vxd into your windows\system directory.
    2. There is an out of date fxmemmap.vxd somewhere beside windows\system directory. You should find all versions of this file on your drive and put the latest one in windows\system. Delete all other versions of it.

Q: My joystick does not appear to work.
A: You will want to make sure that you have setup your joystick properly in Windows. We would recommend you follow the instructions that come with your controller, however, you may also reference our
Main Joystick Troubleshooting page for setup of many common controllers. Once the controller has been properly setup in Windows, please reference the Freespace joystick page for complete instructions regarding the game.

Q: How do you run the Standalone Server option?

A:To run FreeSpace as a Standalone Game Server, go to START and Then RUN and type the following:

    C:\GAMES\FREESPACE\FS -standalone

A Windows dialog will come up with a tabbed interface with your Standalone Server options. Once the default Server Name has been filled in, the server is up and running. You may change the Server Name field and it will update it on players' Join screens.

Most of the interface options on the Standalone are self-explanatory. Lowering the "Frame Cap" slider may provide better performance if many of your players are using slower (28.8) modems.

To shut down the server, press "Shut Down" or simply close the application.

NOTE: FreeSpace Standalone servers perform better under Windows NT than under Windows95/98.

Q: I am getting an error "An error occurred in the move data process: -113" while attempting to install.
A: This is usually when the DOS Real mode drivers are being utilized instead of 95 cdrom drivers. You will want to obtain updated 95 drivers for your cdrom drive.

Q: I am having trouble with Parallax Online Service
A: All support for PXO is being handled by Parallax. Their FAQ and links to their support can be found on the following page:

    http://www.parallaxonline.com/support.cfm

Q: My microphone does not work in Freespace. I can use it with no problems in Windows 95, but when I try to test it in Freespace, it says "You can not record. Please install DirectX," or something like that.
A: The reasons for sound recording not working will be one of two things:

    1. The sound card is not full duplex or doesnt have full duplex enabled.
    2. The sound card drivers dont support DirectSoundCapture.

We would recommend you contact your sound card manufacturer to find out if your sound card meets the above criteria.

Sounds cards known to meet (1) and (2):

    • SBAWE64/32
    • SB16
    • Monster Sound

Sounds cards known to NOT meet (1) and (2):

    • Yamaha OPL3 (sound chip on the motherboard)
    • Ensoniq
    • Opti
    • Crystal Audio

Q: I have the demo. Is the troubleshooting different?
A: The majority of questions regarding technical issues with the full product relate to the demo as well. The demo, however, was made prior to releasing the full product. There may be issues you can run across in the demo that have been fixed with the full product. If you are running across an error that is not covered above you will also want to check
Volition's Freespace Demo Page for more specific issue regarding the demo.

Q: I am getting an error something like "error parseing xxx.tbl..." when attempting to run the game
A: We have seen this happen when the game has been installed to the root of a hard drive partition (ie. D:\>). You will want to make sure that you install the game within a directory. We recommend you keep the default directory structure and merely change the drive (ie. D:\GAMES\Freespace\>).

Q: I have updated to 1.03 and I am receiving "Error: Player wing Alpha cannot have more than 1 wave. File:D:\projects\freespace\Mission\MissionParse.cpp. Line: 2588" or something similar.
A: Unfortunately this is a known bug with the 1.03 update. The 1.03.01 update fixes this trouble. You will want to click on the "Update Freespace" button in the games launcher.

My ship is spinning out of control. How do I stop it?
A: This can happen with some controllers that do not have a 3rd axis. You will want to disable this option or bind it to a key stroke within the game options. To do this you can do the following:

When I attempt to play a network game over my LAN the modem is automatically dialing. Whats wrong?
A: Within the games options you will want to make sure that you disable PXO and enable broadcast locally. If you are still experiencing the trouble than your computer most likely has IE 4.0 or Windows98. You will need to go into your control panel and double-click on "Internet". Click on the "Connection" tab. You will need to change the access internet via modem to access via LAN.

I have installed the Silent Threat add-on but can't seem to play it.
A: Please reference our Silent Threat support page for current information on this add-on pack.

I have downloaded a mission from the internet and I can't figure out how to play it.
A: Although non-Interplay missions are not officially supported. Here is how it should work:

Freespace is asking me to insert CD#1 when I click on the Hangar to start the game.

A: Some early editions of the media were improperly replicated and need to be replaced. Please contact your OEM for a free replacement CD.

If this is the full release of the game you will want to make sure that your DOS based cdrom drivers are not being loaded before windows.
