To Install Game:
DOS Installation -
- Insert the FALLOUT cd into your cd-rom drive.
- Change the drive letter to the cd-rom drive. This is usually D: but your system may use a different
drive letter.
- Type INSTALL and then press the ENTER key on your keyboard to run the installer.
- If you need to change your sound card configuration after installation, run SOUNDDOS.EXE from the directory
where you installed FALLOUT into.
Windows95 Installation -
- Insert the FALLOUT cd into your cd-rom drive.
- If you have autoplay enabled, then you will shortly see an autoplay menu.
- Click on the INSTALL button.
- If you do not have autoplay enabled, open the cd-rom and double-click on the SETUP icon.
- If necessary, you will need to install DirectX 3.0a or higher.
- You can install it from the autoplay menu or run DXSETUP.EXE from the DirectX directory on the cd.
To start Game:
In DOS -
- Change to the game's installation directory, you would type: CD\INTRPLAY\FALLOUT and hit the ENTER
key.
- Now type: FALL and hit ENTER to start the game.
In Windows95 -
- On the autorun menu click on the PLAY button.
- If the AUTORUN screen does not come up for your game, try removing and then re-inserting the FALLOUT
cd back into your cd-rom drive.
- If that does not help, make sure you have AUTO INSERT NOTIFICATION turned ON.
- To turn on or off the AUTO INSERT NOTIFICATION,
- Go to the START button,
- Select SETTINGS, then
- CONTROL PANEL,
- Double click the SYSTEM icon,
- Select the DEVICE MANAGER TAB,
- Locate CD-ROM, and double click it.
- Then click on the information that appears below CD-ROM and select
- PROPERTIES.
- Select the SETTINGS TAB,
- look for the AUTO INSERT NOTIFICATION option, click on the box next to this option to put a check
mark in the box if you want the auto insert notification turned on.
- Click on the APPLY button, then click on OK.
NOTE: Auto insert notification, when turned on, causes the games autorun
menu to appear on your monitor when you insert a cd into your cdrom drive that has an AUTORUN menu on it.
This is normally a convenient way to start a game.

Problem: Getting an error about missing
files such as DINPUT.DLL or DPLAYX.DLL.
Solution: It sounds like you might not have direct-x installed on your system or it may be improperly installed.
Unfortunately, this game needs direct-x installed to work correctly. You may want to contact your system manufacturer
to get an updated copy of it or you can try downloading it from the Microsoft website. They should have a copy
of direct-x at the following URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/directx3.htm
Problem: The game will not install
onto my hard drive.
Solution: There are a few options you can try using to solve the trouble.
First, bring up your Task List with CTRL-ALT DEL keys (or CTRL-ESC keys for Windows3.1). Make sure Systray and
Explorer are the only things listed (or for Windows3.1, only the Program Manager should be listed). End all other
tasks, screen savers and programs. When finished, try to reinstall the game.
If that does not help, try setting your cd-rom optimization to NONE as follows:
- Right-click on the MY COMPUTER icon on your desktop.
- Highlight the word PROPERTIES and then left click on it to select that option.
- Left-click on the PERFORMANCE tab.
- Left-click on the FILE PERFORMANCE button.
- Left-click on the CD-ROM tab.
- Make sure OPTIMIZE ACCESS PATTERN is set to NO READ AHEAD.
- Also move the slider bar in the SUPPLEMENTAL CACHE SIZE to the left so that it is next to the word SMALL.
- Left-click on the OK button.
- Left-click on the CLOSE button.
- Re-Start your computer if you are promped to do so.
- Try the game again.
In addition to the above trouble shooting suggestions, you may want to consider updating your Windows drivers
for the CD-ROM drive you are using. You can obtain updated Windows 95 drivers by contacting its manufacturer.
Problem: I deleted Fallout from my
harddrive, and now the game will not install again.
Solution: We need to remove Fallout from the Windows 95 Registry.
From the START button select RUN, and type REGEDIT.
Now double click:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- SOFTWARE
- INTERPLAY
- Delete the FALLOUT folder
Now Double Click:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- SOFTWARE
- MICROSOFT
- WINDOWS
- CURRENT VERSION
- APP PATHS
- Delete the reference to FALLOUTW.EXE
Close the Registry window, and try installing Fallout again.
Problem: In the military base, I lowered
the force fields using the computer terminal, but they didn't lower whats going on?
Solution: If you have any explosives, you can destroy the force fields to get past them. Blow up the cylinder next
to each force field to lower it. Use either plastic explosives, or dynamite.
